How to change text case in 4 steps

  1. Paste or type your text in the box at the top of this page. Tap Paste Text to paste from the clipboard in one tap.
  2. Pick a style: UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case or one of the six others.
  3. The converted text appears at once in the output; switch styles as often as you like, the original stays in the box.
  4. Tap Copy and paste the result where you need it.

Changing case can change the length of a text: the German ß becomes SS in capitals, so one character turns into two. If your text has to fit a limit, check it in our character counter after converting.

UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case and 7 more in one box

Here is what each of the ten styles does to the same sentence, “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”.

Style What it does Result
UPPERCASE Every letter capital THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG
lowercase Every letter small the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Title Case Main words capitalized, short words such as “of” and “the” kept small The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog
Capitalized Case The first letter of every word capitalized The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog
Sentence case Only the first letter of each sentence and line capitalized The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
iNVERSE cASE Capitals become small and small become capitals THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG
aLtErNaTe Small and capital letters take turns tHe qUiCk bRoWn fOx jUmPs oVeR ThE LaZy dOg
camelCase Words joined, each new word capitalized, first word small theQuickBrownFoxJumpsOverTheLazyDog
snake_case Words joined with _ in lowercase the_quick_brown_fox_jumps_over_the_lazy_dog
kebab-case Words joined with – in lowercase the-quick-brown-fox-jumps-over-the-lazy-dog

Upper case to lower case and back are the two most used conversions: fixing text typed with Caps Lock on, or turning a heading into capitals. camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case are for code, file names and web addresses; they drop punctuation and join the words.

Title case rules: which small words stay lowercase

Title Case on this page follows one simple rule: capitalize the first word, the last word and every word in between, except these 19 short words, which stay lowercase unless they open or close the title: a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, in, nor, of, on, or, per, the, to, up, via, vs.

Input Title Case Capitalized Case
the lord of the rings The Lord of the Rings The Lord Of The Rings
a tale of two cities A Tale of Two Cities A Tale Of Two Cities
what is it for What Is It For What Is It For
gone with the wind Gone With the Wind Gone With The Wind
war and peace War and Peace War And Peace
how to train your dragon How to Train Your Dragon How To Train Your Dragon
the art of war The Art of War The Art Of War
pride and prejudice Pride and Prejudice Pride And Prejudice

Style guides do not agree on the exact list. AP, Chicago and APA each have their own rules for prepositions and for words of four letters or more, so for a school paper or a publication, check the guide you are asked to follow and adjust a word or two by hand. If you want every word capitalized, use Capitalized Case, which is what Microsoft Word calls “Capitalize Each Word”.

In title case, short words such as “of” and “the” stay lowercase.

Sentence case vs title case

Sentence case writes a heading like a normal sentence: only the first word and names get a capital, as in “How to change text case on a phone”. Title case capitalizes the main words: “How to Change Text Case on a Phone”. News sites and apps often use sentence case because it is easier to read; book and film titles usually use title case. The Sentence case style here capitalizes the first letter after a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or line break; it cannot know which words are names, so add those capitals yourself.

Convert case without breaking emoji, accents and symbols

The converter uses your browser’s own Unicode case rules, so it works for accented letters and other alphabets, not just A–Z. On October 10, 2026 we ran these inputs through the tool in Node.js 22 (the same JavaScript engine as Chrome):

Input Style Output What happened
straße UPPERCASE STRASSE German ß has no single capital in this rule set, so it becomes two letters: the text gets longer
İSTANBUL lowercase i̇stanbul Turkish dotted İ becomes i + a combining dot (2 code points); Turkish readers expect plain i
ΟΔΟΣ ΣΟΦΙΑ lowercase οδος σοφια Greek Σ becomes final ς at the end of a word and σ elsewhere, as Greek spelling requires
ĐƯỜNG PHỐ HÀ NỘI lowercase đường phố hà nội Vietnamese letters with two marks convert correctly
džungla Title Case Džungla The digraph dž takes its own title-case form Dž, not the all-capital DŽ
FULL lowercase full Full-width letters have their own lowercase forms
𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 Text lowercase 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 text Bold “fancy” letters have no case, so only the normal word changes
hello 👋 world 🇺🇸 UPPERCASE HELLO 👋 WORLD 🇺🇸 Emoji and flags are not letters and pass through unchanged

Two cases need care. Turkish and Azeri use dotless ı and dotted İ as separate letters, and a general converter follows the international rule, not the Turkish one; check Turkish text by eye. And fancy Unicode letters such as 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 or 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽 are symbols, not letters with a case, so to restyle them, retype the plain text and style it again with our fancy text generator.

Change case in Word, Google Docs and Excel

In Microsoft Word, select the text and press Shift + F3 until you get lowercase, UPPERCASE or Capitalize Each Word, or use the Change Case button (Aa) on the Home tab, which also has Sentence case and tOGGLE cASE. That is how Microsoft Support describes it (checked October 10, 2026). In Google Docs, use Format › Text › Capitalization. In Excel and Google Sheets, the formulas =UPPER(A1), =LOWER(A1) and =PROPER(A1) give capitals, small letters and capitalized words.

On a phone there is no built-in button to change the case of text you already typed. Open this page in your phone’s browser, paste the text, pick a style and copy it back; the tool works the same on Android and iPhone.

Where converted text works

Converted text is ordinary text, so it pastes into any app, form or document. We have not yet tested each style inside WhatsApp, Instagram, iMessage or Discord on real phones, so this page does not promise how each app shows it. One thing to know: some apps and sites change the case of what you type themselves, for example by capitalizing the first word of a message, so check the preview before you send.
